How SA Ports Drive The Economic Growth In SA

South African ports improve SA economy
Link Ship Chandlers is very excited to offer the services of our world-renowned chandlery enterprise at three new ports along the South African coastline this year. This includes Durban, Richard’s Bay and East London.
Adding these ports to our roster will mean that our company will in future be able to assist ship owners and operators with chandling services at every major SA port of call – enabling them to do business smoothly and easily without having to collaborate with multiple maritime and offshore procurement companies over the course of a given journey.
The seaports along South Africa’s 2800m coastline form a crucial link in many logistics chains globally, and our aim is to improve operational efficiencies for vessels that dock to meet and exceed global standards.
Our country is situated on one of the busiest international sea routes by far, which makes it a critical touchpoint for international maritime transporters. As such, these terminals and ports are also engines that fuel economic growth within our own borders. In fact, most of southern Africa’s import and export commodities pass through our country’s 7 logistics ports, namely Durban, Richards Bay, Saldanha, Cape Town, Gqeberha, East London and the Port of Ngqura.
Frequent users of these ports include everything from major automotive manufacturers and agricultural producers to timber and forestry businesses, as well as the mining industry and export companies that specialise in metals and minerals. As such, SA ports have gained exceptional efficiency in handling containers, mineral- and agricultural bulk, as well as automobiles at dedicated Ro-Ro terminals situated in Durban, East London and Gqeberha.
South Africa’s container terminals at Durban, Ngqura, East London, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town have also recently been upgraded to ensure greater efficiency and operational capabilities. In fact, Ngqura is capable of accepting and assisting container vessels with up to 12 000 20-foot container units when fully laden.
It is our privilege to be a part of this burgeoning sector of the South African economy and to play a role in attracting new business to our shores. Keep an eye on the blog in the coming months for more fascinating stories and insights from the world of shipping, and updates on our new branches in Durban, Richard’s Bay and East London as it becomes available.
In the meantime, feel free to get in touch with a member of the Link Ship Chandlers team if you would like to learn more about the chandling services we currently provide from ports in Cape Town, Saldanha, Gqeberha, Coega, Durban and Richards Bay.
