Coega Port IDZ & Link Ship Chandlers

Coega Port
The shipping trade has played a vital role in the development of South Africa over many centuries. One of the most recent commercial ports to be developed along our sought-after coast line is Coega, also known as the port of Ngqura in regional Xhosa. Situated approximately 20 km northeast of Port Elizabeth at the mouth of the Coega River in Nelson Mandela Bay, it is now officially the 8th largest port of its kind in South Africa.
DID YOU KNOW? Ngqura is also spelled Cougha, Coecha, Koecha in various other African dialects. The name is derived from the eponymous river and means ‘groundwater’ in Khoekhoen.
Coega port also has the distinction of being located in the largest Industrial Development Zone in southern Africa – Coega IDZ. This zone was the first to be declared in South Africa in 2001 and is strategically located along the east-west trade route that provides passage for both African and global markets. Currently, this bourgeoning IDZ leverages public-sector investment to attract foreign and domestic direct investment in the manufacturing sector with an export orientation. By growing the region’s automotive, energy, logistics and metal sectors, among others, the Coega IDZ is advancing socio-economic development in the Eastern Cape by bolstering skills development and job creation among its inhabitants.
Link Ship Chandlers Coega is proud to play a role in this ongoing initiative by supplying cargo vessels, fishing vessels, private yachts, cruise liners, container vessels, LNG (Liquid Nitrogen Gas) vessels, offshore oil rigs and oil carriers that make use of Coega port.
