The cruise ship industry is full of unknown facts

As a provider of chandling support and services to an array of vessels that dock at ports all along the South African cruise line, including cruise ships, the Link Ship Chandlers team has always had a keen interest in how these businesses operate. After all, some of these enormous ships are the size of small South African towns (just kidding – but almost!).

Here are a few of the most interesting facts we’ve learned about cruise ships in recent years:

Cruise Liners are a Major Part of the Tourism Industry

In 1990, around 4 million people were going on cruise liners each year. These days, these numbers are almost ten times that. As such, it only makes sense that the global cruise industry is worth billions and sustains thousands of jobs. In 2005, the estimated worth of the industry stood at $29 billion, and it sustained around 559 000 jobs. These days it’s far higher.

Some Ships Boast Something Called ‘VR Balconies’

Interior cruise ship cabins have never been as popular as cabins with a view, which makes sense. You’re on the ship to enjoy the fresh air and ocean views, after all! This is why the Royal Caribbean line has found a way to bring the view inside. They have installed VR balconies in their interior cabins that transmit images from the outside of the ship to the interior cabins in real-time. How amazing?

You Could Live on A Cruise Ship Full-Time

If you’ve always dreamed about trotting the globe every day of the year, you may just be in luck – there are cruise liners that offer permanent residence! Naturally, it costs a pretty penny, but if you are able to pony up you can spend the remainder of your life at sea on vessels like these.

Your Cabin Was Probably Not Constructed In Situ

Cruise ships take a long time to build from a mechanical point of view. Of course, it’s also important that their staterooms are gorgeous and luxurious. This is why in many cases the rooms are actually built offsite (by a completely different company at times) and only added to the ship at a later stage.
